Waste awaiting disposal in Chiang Rai nears 60,000 tons

Miscellaneous

Waste waiting to be disposed of after flooding in Chiang Rai has reached nearly 60,000 tons. The Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment is rushing to find a place to put the waste.

Mr. Surin Vorakitthamrong, Deputy Director-General of the Pollution Control Department (PCD), revealed that from the survey of garbage in the flooded areas, Chiang Rai Municipality and Mae Sai Subdistrict Municipality, Chiang Rai Province, there is an estimated accumulation of garbage of approximately 68,000 tons. Currently, approximately 9,400 tons have been collected for management, leaving 58,600 tons to be managed. The total amount of garbage generated in Chiang Rai Municipality is 50,000 tons, with 6,400 tons collected and 43,600 tons remaining. Mae Sai Subdistrict Municipality has an estimated amount of garbage of 18,000 tons, with 3,000 tons collected and 15,000 tons remaining. The problem and obstacle are that both garbage collection points are full of garbage and are not sufficient to accommodate the amount of gar
bage. The department is currently discussing with relevant agencies to find an area to urgently support garbage separation.

In addition, the waste disposal site of Mae Sai Municipality is almost full of waste. It is necessary to request additional budget to expand the area to accommodate the increasing amount of waste. As for the wastewater treatment system, it was found that there was damage in several places. It is necessary to coordinate with engineers to assess the damage so that the system can be restored as soon as possible.

In this regard, Mr. Chatuporn Buruspat, Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment, has ordered since September 21 for the Pollution Control Department to coordinate to find an area under the supervision of the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment to be a temporary resting point for flooded waste. The Pollution Control Department has visited the area together with the Royal Forest Department to survey the target area to be a temporary resting
point for flooded waste in Chiang Rai Province, which is a national forest reserve, Doi Pui Forest (the area seized is under legal proceedings). It was found that there was a suitable area of ??2 rai because most of the area is steep. The amount that can be used as a temporary resting point for the waste is expected to be approximately 4,000 tons. They will also survey the area of ??Pa Ko Dam Subdistrict, Mae Lao District, which has an area of ??approximately 50 rai, to be an additional temporary resting point for flooded waste.
