Udon Thani, During the 3-day long weekend, many families take the opportunity to travel, but this weekend is special because Thailand just celebrated a new UNESCO cultural heritage, Phu Phra Bat Historical Park, Udon Thani Province.

Phu Phrabat Historical Park, Ban Tiew Subdistrict, Mueang Phan Subdistrict, Ban Phue District, Udon Thani Province, opened for free admission from July 27, 2024 until August 12 after being registered as the second world heritage site in Udon Thani Province, following Ban Chiang archaeological site, and is the 8th world heritage site, including the 5th cultural world heritage site in Thailand, following Si Thep Ancient City, Phetchabun Province.

The announcement was made at the 46th session of the World Heritage Committee in New Delhi, Republic of India, on 27 July. Phu Phrabat Historical Park was proposed for inclusion as a World Heritage Site in 2004, but was later withdrawn. In 2016, it was submitted for consideration for inclusion again. The Ministry of Culture has announced that admission fees will be waived until August 12, 2024, to celebrate the World Heritage inscription.

In addition, the government has a policy to increase cultural competitiveness by increasing the number of world heritage sites, with 5 more sites proposed:

Wat Phra Mahathat Woramahawihan, Wat Phra Borommathat, Nakhon Si Thammarat Province (preliminary list on 28 August 2012)

Monuments, Sites and Cultural Landscapes of Chiang Mai, the Capital of Lanna, Historical Building Groups and Related Landscapes (Preliminary Listing on 9 February 2015)

Phra That Phanom, Nakhon Phanom Province (preliminary list on February 2, 2017)

Phanom Rung Temple Group, Muang Tam Temple and Plai Bat Temple (preliminary registration on 11 April 2019)

Songkhla and related communities along Songkhla Lake (preliminary list on 26 July 2024) was recently considered by the World Heritage
Committee to be included in the preliminary list at a meeting in New Delhi, India.
