Prime Minister Patongtarn” welcomes the Equal Marriage Law Effective 120 days after this or from 22 January 2025 onwards. Thanks to the push from all sectors, it is a joint struggle of everyone.

Yesterday (24 September) The Government Gazette publishes the Civil and Commercial Code Amendment Act (No. 24) B.E. 2567 (2024) or the Equal Marriage Law. which certifies marriage between individuals and is no longer limited to men and women.

For the essence of the Act, such as: 1. Stipulating that two persons, regardless of gender, can get engaged or marry each other. 2. Amend the words “male”, “female”, “husband”, “wife” and “husband and wife” to “person”, “fiancée”, “fiancée” and “spouse” to have a meaning that covers the fiancé or spouse regardless of gender.

3. Increase the grounds for claiming compensation and grounds for filing for divorce to cover cases where the fiancé or spouse One party has a relationship with another person, regardless of gender. 4. Amend the conditions for the new marriage period unde
r Article 1453 to apply only to cases where a woman with a man as her original spouse will remarry a man.

This law also has a civil effect. All provisions of laws, rules, regulations, and requirements that refer to a husband or wife shall be deemed to refer to a spouse who has registered a marriage under this amended Civil and Commercial Code.

However, This law will come into effect after 120 years from the date of publication in the Government Gazette, which means that if there is a person who wishes to register a marriage under the new law, it will not be possible to do so immediately while the law has just been promulgated. You have to wait for 120 days or from January 22, 2025 onwards to be able to register your marriage under the new civil law that guarantees equal marriage rights.
