Prime Minister Plans to Form Committee for Thailand-Cambodia Maritime Negotiations Within Two Weeks.


Bangkok: The Prime Minister has announced plans to establish a committee within the next two weeks to negotiate the overlapping maritime areas between Thailand and Cambodia. This initiative aims to address the complex issues surrounding the rights and benefits of these regions.

According to Thai News Agency, Prime Minister Ms. Paethongtarn Shinawatra revealed after the recent cabinet meeting that the appointment of the Joint Technical Committee (JTC) to discuss the intricate maritime zones, known as the OCA area under the MOU 2001, has not yet been considered. However, she anticipates that the matter will be brought to the cabinet within the stipulated two-week timeframe.

The Prime Minister emphasized the importance of forming a committee to navigate this international issue, which requires thorough examination and communication. While previous administrations have established such committees, the current government has yet to appoint one. Thus, this development is deemed crucial for progressing negotiation

Regarding leadership, the Prime Minister mentioned the possibility of Mr. Phumtham Vejjayachai, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Defense, taking on the role of chairman. However, she indicated that a final decision on his appointment, as suggested by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, is still pending further review.
