Miscellaneous

The Director-General of the National Park Department revealed that the Department’s veterinarians met with several sectors and agreed to examine the health of ‘Plai Khundet,’ a wild elephant injured by a snare since it was a child, who was later sent to be cared for at Elephant Nature Park. Once the health examination results confirmed that the elephant was ready to be moved, it would be moved.

Mr. Atthaphon Charoenchansa, Director-General of the Department of National Parks, Wildlife and Plant Conservation, said that he had received a report from Veterinarian Ms. Rattana Sarivongchan, Veterinarian of the Conservation Area Office 16 (Chiang Mai), regarding the results of the meeting with representatives of the Elephant and Environment Conservation Foundation, which oversees Elephant Nature Park, the Chiang Mai Provincial Livestock Office, the Mae Taeng District Livestock Office, and Mr. Thiraphat Trangprakan, President of the Thai Elephant Federation Association, regarding the transportation of the wild ele
phant ‘Plai Khun Det’, which was left under the care of Elephant Nature Park in Mae Taeng District, Chiang Mai Province.

All parties agreed that an external physical examination and blood tests were required to examine the general health, including testing for diseases transmitted from animals to animals and diseases transmitted from animals to humans. Today, the veterinary team planning to examine the health of ‘Plai Khundet’ consisted of veterinarians from the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine, Chiang Mai University, the National Elephant Institute under Royal Patronage, the Elephant and Environment Conservation Foundation, the Conservation Area Office 16 (Chiang Mai), and the Mae Taeng District Livestock Office.

The health check plan for the elephant is expected to be sedated. If the results show that the animal is healthy and ready to be moved, the destination is the National Elephant Institute under the Royal Patronage in Lampang Province, which has space to support it and a quarantine pen before moving t
o a new place. Documents will be prepared to request approval from the Director-General of the Department of National Parks, Wildlife and Plant Conservation to move Phlai Khundet.

During the preparation for transport, we will monitor for diseases and promote health by giving vitamins, which the veterinary team will monitor at all times.
