Pheu Thai Party Secretary Pushes for Accountability in Tak Bai Case

Internal Affairs

Bangkok: Pheu Thai Party Secretary-General, Mr. Surawong Thienthong, emphasized the party’s stance on not supporting Gen. Pisal Wattanawongkiri, who is currently evading an arrest warrant issued by the Narathiwat Provincial Court in the Tak Bai protest dispersal case. Mr. Surawong highlighted the party’s efforts to bring Gen. Pisal back to Thailand to face the charges, threatening expulsion if he returns after the statute of limitations expires.

According to Thai News Agency, Mr. Surawong, who also serves as the Minister of Tourism and Sports, clarified the party’s position during a recent press briefing. He expressed the urgency of the matter, describing the pursuit of justice as a non-negotiable aspect of the party’s principles. Despite potential concerns about the impact on the party’s image and voter base, particularly in the South, Mr. Surawong remains steadfast, asserting that the issue remains a personal matter for Gen. Pisal.

The controversy stems from Gen. Pisal’s alleged involvement in the dispers
al of a protest in Tak Bai, which led to serious legal repercussions and an outstanding arrest warrant. The Pheu Thai Party has made multiple attempts to contact Gen. Pisal to persuade him to return and address the charges, but efforts have so far been unsuccessful.

Addressing concerns over inaction, Mr. Surawong elaborated that expulsion from the party would not affect Gen. Pisal’s status as an MP but indicated that it is a necessary step if he fails to comply after the statute of limitations. This stance underscores the party’s commitment to accountability and the rule of law, despite the potential political fallout.
