Nang Rong: Many agencies rushed to aid a former teacher compelled to construct a cage-like room in her house for her son, who had fallen into the grips of drug addiction and online gambling. Authorities highlighted the illegality of such detention and are considering rehabilitative measures through court orders.
According to Thai News Agency, the case involves Ms. Sarapee (pseudonym), a 64-year-old retired teacher in Nang Rong District, Buriram Province, who took extreme measures to confine her 42-year-old son due to his severe addiction issues. Her son, unemployed and frequently aggressive, has been undergoing treatments for his addiction, but repeatedly relapses, causing distress and fear for his mother and the community. Despite multiple treatments, the threat of his violent outbursts persists, leading Ms. Sarapee to prepare a confined space equipped with amenities in hopes of isolating him until recovery. She awaits further guidance from local authorities and community members on the legality and feasibi
lity of her plan.
Recently, the Nang Rong District Chief and related agencies, including the prosecutor, probation officers, police, and public health officials, visited the area. Their goal was to investigate the situation and offer advice on appropriate treatment options for the son, suspected of also suffering from mental illness.
Mr. Thanathornphon Khaiphan, district chief for security, explained that a special task force exists to handle such cases, focusing on mental health assessments and treatment. However, he emphasized that creating a barred room for confinement is illegal detention, necessitating a dialogue to find lawful solutions that ensure the safety and comfort of all parties involved.
Pol. Col. Thawee Sodsong, Minister of Justice, has instructed the Office of the Narcotics Control Board (ONCB) to work with the Ministry of Public Health on this matter. Recognizing the challenges drug addicts face post-rehabilitation, he stressed the importance of supportive community environments. A forthco
ming meeting on November 7 will bring local representatives together to discuss strategies for creating safer communities and preventing relapse, potentially influencing future court-ordered rehabilitation policies. – Thai News Agency
