Bangkok: MP Phanthil Nuamchim of the Prachachon Party has voiced his concerns about the future of Khlong Toei Port, questioning whether the land might be handed over to capitalists for development into a casino. He emphasized the importance of consulting the local population, stating, “Will you not ask the people?”
According to Thai News Agency, Mr. Phanthil, who serves as a member of the Subcommittee tasked with studying the development of Thailand’s ports, announced the progress of the committee’s work. Following a motion to establish the Subcommittee on October 31st, the first meeting was held to outline the study’s framework. This framework aims to address various aspects such as transportation, economy, investment, environment, disaster relief, tourism, housing, and urban planning. The Subcommittee also plans to engage with relevant agencies to gather information and learn from past issues to prevent future problems.
Addressing rumors about the potential transformation of Khlong Toei Port into a casino
, Mr. Phanthil expressed concerns about whether such developments would benefit the majority. He questioned whether the central area, opposite Bang Krachao, might be allocated to capitalists. He emphasized the need for a collective agreement on managing the area, considering the transportation issues that residents have raised, such as traffic congestion, large trucks in the city, and dust problems.
When asked about local opinions on the casino proposal, Mr. Phanthil mentioned that a committee led by Mr. Suriya Juangroongruangkit, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Transport, has been established, alongside four subcommittees. As a representative of the local population, Mr. Phanthil expressed his concern over whether people’s participation would be ensured. He advocated for using the parliamentary mechanism as a platform for public involvement, given the significant number of households residing in Khlong Toei.
“Shouldn’t we ask them if they are okay with developing a large project in the heart of the c
ity? Many times, when surveys are conducted, we don’t know who they ask. But regarding the casino issue, I am sure that Bangkokians are quite concerned because the topic of debate is whether we should bring a large casino to the heart of Bangkok or not,” Mr. Phanthil stated.
