Minister of Justice Intervenes in Buriram Mother’s Struggle with Drug-Addicted Son.

Buriram: Pol. Col. Thawee Sodsong, Minister of Justice, has taken decisive action in response to a troubling case in Buriram Province, where a mother resorted to imprisoning her drug-addicted son. The child, despite undergoing multiple treatments, continued to exhibit violent and unstable behavior upon returning home, compelling the mother to build a cell for him.

According to Thai News Agency, Pol. Col. Thawee has instructed officials from the Office of the Narcotics Control Board (ONCB) to collaborate with the Ministry of Public Health in addressing the situation. Although the parents’ actions were driven by desperation, Pol. Col. Thawee noted the legal implications, as the child could potentially file a complaint for illegal detention. He indicated the possibility of using this case to explore the implementation of repeated rehabilitation measures enforced by court order.

Pol. Col. Thawee acknowledged a common issue faced by recovering addicts: the tendency to relapse due to unemployment and unsupportive
environments. He emphasized the need for government policies to focus on strengthening communities where rehab patients reintegrate. To address this, a meeting is scheduled for November 7, gathering local representatives from the Subdistrict Administrative Organization and the Municipal League nationwide. The goal is to reassess strategies and foster a society that discourages drug relapse through supportive environments.
