Meteorological Department warns against believing fake news about another storm causing flooding in Thailand

Miscellaneous

The Meteorological Department urges people not to believe or share fake news about a storm hitting Vietnam on 13-14 Oct, which will cause flooding in several provinces in Thailand. It confirms that there are no signs of a tropical storm forming near Thailand.

Mr. Somkuan Tonjan, Director of the Meteorological Department’s Weather Forecast Division, said that the public should not panic about the news that has been published with messages and images. “…and it is expected that there is a chance that a storm will hit Vietnam between October 13-14, 2024. Thailand must therefore closely monitor it.” The news also stated that this storm will cause flooding in many provinces in Thailand again.

The Meteorological Department would like to clarify that the information is not true and does not come from the Meteorological Department’s data sources. From continuous inspection and monitoring during October 13-14, 2024, there is still no sign of a tropical cyclone forming near Thailand.

Mr. Somkuan said that the curr
ent weather is a season change or the end of the rainy season, the beginning of winter, so there are many factors that will affect the weather in Thailand, such as the wind direction is unstable, there are many currents, at some times there is high pressure from China spreading down to cover, causing rain to occur in the beginning, the weather starts to get colder in the upper part of Thailand, the wind that blows over will start to change direction to the east or the northeast, which is the wind of the winter season.

In October, there will still be rain in the lower northeastern region, lower central region, eastern region, Bangkok and its vicinity. As for the southern region, when the prevailing wind changes to the east and northeast, it will cause the southern region, especially the southern region on the Gulf of Thailand, to have more rain and some areas will have heavy to very heavy rain. The waves will be strong, which will require periodic monitoring.

There is a chance that a tropical storm may form
in the South China Sea and move into the Gulf of Thailand and the South. The Meteorological Department will closely monitor and keep a close watch. If it forms or intensifies into a storm, the Meteorological Department will issue a warning announcement 3 days in advance. The public is asked to follow information from the Meteorological Department.

For the weather forecast for 11-20 October 2024, the North and upper Northeast will start to have cool weather in the morning and there will still be rain in some areas. As for the western part of the North, the lower Northeast, the East and the Central regions, including Bangkok and its vicinity, there will still be rain and thunderstorms. It will continue to fall and there will be heavy rain in some areas. Therefore, we still need to monitor the accumulated rain.

The South will see more and more rain, with some areas experiencing heavy rain, especially in the Gulf of Thailand. Be careful of heavy rain and accumulated rain, which may cause flash floods, mudslides
, and strong winds in areas with thunderstorms.
