Indonesia can become Muslim fashion trendsetter: ministry

Indonesia is in a strong position to become a global Muslim fashion trendsetter, assistant deputy for partnerships and market expansion at the Ministry of Cooperatives and Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs), Fixy, said on Thursday.

“We have strong power in terms of designers and have a large population. How about becoming a trendsetter (for Muslim fashion) in the world?” she asked at a press conference here.

This year, the Ministry of Cooperatives and SMEs has joined the Indonesia Sharia Economic Festival (ISEF) with a mission to put Indonesian Muslim fashion on the international stage, including through the holding of the Indonesia International Modest Fashion Festival (IN2MOTIONFEST).

IN2MOTIONFEST is also a result of collaboration with Bank Indonesia, the Indonesian Fashion Chamber, and other related institutions.

“Next year, it is hoped that other ministries will join related associations and stakeholders to push IN2MOTIONFEST to the international stage jointly,” she said.

Quoting President Joko Widodo, Fixy said that Indonesia, as one of the five largest markets for Muslim fashion in the world and the number one market in Asia, should be the leader in Muslim fashion.

“We are pushing the entire ecosystem in the fashion world to move together to the international stage,” she remarked.

Meanwhile, director of the economics and sharia finance department of Bank Indonesia, Ita Rulina, said that IN2MOTIONFEST is one of the agendas of ISEF 2022, which is scheduled to take place from October 5 to 9, 2022, at the Jakarta Convention Center (JCC).

“There are two pre-event activities and the main event (IN2MOTIONFEST), which is held twice a year. Insha Allah (if God wills), it will become a movement that drives the ‘locomotive’ of the economy,” she said.

She expressed the hope that Indonesia’s halal industry will advance, especially in modest fashion.
