Heavy precipitation triggered flooding in the districts of Cilacap and Banyumas in Central Java on Thursday evening until early Friday, according to Head of the Cilacap Meteorology Station’s Technician Group Teguh Wardoyo.
“Based on rainfall monitoring at several locations on March 18, 2022, precipitation in the districts of Cilacap, Banyumas, and Purbalingga was categorized as heavy to very heavy, while some were even categorized as extreme,” Wardoyo noted here on Friday.
The rainfall data collected at the Jeruklegi Agricultural Extension Center (BPP), Cilacap, showed that precipitation had reached 215 millimeters, or in the extreme category, as it was exceeding 150 millimeters for 24 hours.
In Klapagading, Wangon Sub-district, Banyumas District, it was recorded at 114 millimeters, and in Losari, Rembang Sub-district, Purbalingga District, it was recorded at 102 millimeters, or categorized as very heavy.
The Tunggul Wulung Meteorological Station recorded the precipitation rate at 79 millimeters in Cilacap, the Meteorology Post at the Tunggul Wulung Airport logged 58 millimeters, and at Kedungreja Cilacap at 85 millimeters, which was categorized as heavy.
“It rains very heavily if the rainfall in 24 hours ranges from 100 to 150 millimeters, and it is categorized as heavy rain if it ranges from 50 to 100 millimeters,” he expounded.
Floods swamped several areas in Cilacap and Banyumas on Friday, as heavy rains lashed since Thursday night.
In addition to flooding, landslides hit the villages of Jurangbahas and Randegan in Wangon Sub-district, Banyumas, on Friday (Mar 18) morning, following heavy rains.
