Fabric Shops in Chiang Mai Hold Discounted Auction Following Floods

CHIANG MAI: Fabric shops in Chiang Mai, including Chiang Mai Jai Dee Shop in Kad Luang, Waroros Market, have begun auctioning off fabrics at significantly reduced prices after recent flooding damaged their inventory, drawing local buyers eager for bargains.

According to Thai News Agency, the floods hit the downtown area of Chiang Mai unexpectedly hard, with water levels rising higher than anticipated, reaching waist height in some areas. Mr. Anuchon Mano, an employee at Chiang Mai Jai Dee Shop, explained that despite taking precautions based on previous flood levels in 2011, the shop was not fully prepared for the severity of this year’s flooding. As a result, the store’s entire stock of fabrics was compromised, forcing the shop to sell these materials at a loss, with prices reduced to 10-40 baht per meter from the usual 200-300 baht per meter.

The aftermath of the flooding has prompted other fabric retailers in the area to adopt similar measures, offering discounts on damaged fabrics. Customers have respon
ded positively, purchasing these materials for various uses, including clothing, curtains, and bed sheets.

In response to the flooding, the Chiang Mai Municipality has deployed water trucks to clean the roads in front of Waroros Market. This effort aims to reduce dust and restore cleanliness to the area, ensuring it is ready to welcome tourists once more.
