Democrat Party surveys Chao Phraya River, concerned about seawater backflow

Internal Affairs

Dr. Ae” leads the Democrat Party team to inspect the situation along the Chao Phraya River, concerned about seawater backflow, ready to join the government in solving long-term problems, creating a system to prevent opening and closing the mouth of the Chao Phraya River – Kaem Ling, asking to speed up the work, fearing that Bangkok will be submerged in the future.

Mr. Suchatvee Suwansawat, Deputy Leader of the Democrat Party in his capacity as the person in charge of Bangkok, and his team went to observe the Chao Phraya River level and the readiness of the people to cope with the water from the north and the seawater at Talad Noi Community, Samphanthawong District, which is considered another area behind the Chao Phraya River defense line and often has problems with flooding every year. Mr. Suchatvee took the media to inspect the area of ??the Rong Kuek Shrine, next to the Chao Phraya River, where the Bangkok Metropolitan Administration has placed sandbags to block the water and installed water risers.

Mr.
Suchatvee said that the villagers here will be affected during the high tide. Today, I would like to thank the BMA for trying to solve the problem by installing sandbags and water pumps, but it is only a short-term solution. From now on, Bangkok will not be safe from flooding, especially at the end of the year. Bangkok will be at greater risk with water from the north, high tide, and rainwater in the area, which will push the Chao Phraya River level up. Finally, in the future, Bangkok will be submerged. Therefore, the correct solution should be a medium-term plan, which is to build underground flood retention basins in important risk areas to store water during high tide. As for the long-term problem, it must be solved at the root, which is the mouth of the Chao Phraya River, which should have a system to open and close the water, like in developed countries such as the Netherlands, Italy, and Singapore, which took no less than 20 years to build.

‘Today, I came to emphasize that if we do not start planning i
n the medium and long term, Bangkok will definitely be flooded. The Democrat Party is therefore ready to support Bangkok and the government to set a solution, which will not only be for Bangkokians, but also for future generations, before continuing to the Chao Sue Kong Shrine to check the water level,’ said Mr. Suchatvee.

Mr. Boonchu Phomwaranon, caretaker of the Rong Kuek Shrine, admitted that short-term solutions could be done to some extent. However, what he found was that even though the water did not overflow, some buildings had collapsed. If it really did collapse, he did not know who to demand or seek responsibility from. However, this year he felt confident and relieved that the water would not overflow into the Talat Noi community because he had already received initial assistance from the BMA.

Then, Mr. Suchatvee traveled to Wat Mangkon Kamalawat (Wat Leng Noei Yi) in the Pom Prap Sattru Phai district to inspect the progress of the structure of the ‘underground monkey cheek’ to store more than 10
,000 cubic meters of water, which is considered an example of a project that will be pushed forward to the government’s resolution.
