In general, ‘artificial tears’ rarely have side effects or are harmful to the eyes. Therefore, artificial tears have been widely used. But if you have problems with eye irritation, eye stiffness, or very dry eyes, it is recommended that you first see an ophthalmologist to check that the
condition is not caused by other eye diseases, but only by dry eyes. Because if it is caused by various diseases, the root cause will be properly treated.

What are the causes of “dry eyes”?

Types of artificial tears

‘Artificial tears’ can be divided into two types: those that must be used within 24 hours and artificial tears that come in eye drop bottles.

1. The type that must be used within 24 hours is pure artificial tears packed in a small tube that does not contain preservatives or substances to prevent bacteria from growing.

These types of artificial tears rarely irritate the eyes. The drops can be used more than 4-5 times
a day (as needed), making them suitable for people who have quite a lot of dry eye problems. And it is necessary to instill artificial tears several times a day.

2. Bottled artificial tears, eye drops Available in sizes ranging from 5-15 cc., these types of artificial tears contain a lot of preservatives or substances that prevent the growth of bacteria. Therefore, it can be stored for use after opening the bottle for 1 month.

The disadvantages of artificial tears that contain preservatives are: If the drops are applied to the eyes more than 3-4 times a day, they may cause irritation. Therefore, bottled artificial tears are suitable for people who have mild dry eye symptoms.

Using “artificial tears” correctly

The correct use of artificial tears is to use them cleanly.

When opening the bottle , you must not touch the inside of the bottle.

While instilling, must not touch the eyelashes or eyelids because there is a chance that germs can go back into the bottle.

In addition, storing “artificial tears” for
1 month should be stored in a normal refrigerator compartment. It will keep for about 1 month. If it exceeds that period, It is recommended to discard and replace with a new bottle, it will be safer.

Use your eyes correctly to prevent “dry eyes”

In addition to using artificial tears It is recommended to adjust the behavior of using the eyes, such as not looking at the eyes continuously for a long time. Avoid hot and dry areas. Including areas where air blows into the eyes.

Blinking properly 8-12 times per minute can naturally reduce the problem of dry eyes. In general, it is not recommended to always use artificial tears.
