Kanchanaburi, 8 Oct. – Arrest of ‘Mr. Mong,’ a young Burmese man who stole 2 baht worth of gold worth over 80,000 baht from a gold shop in the middle of Kanchanaburi. During questioning, he confessed that he needed the money to go see his girlfriend.

CCTV footage captured the moment inside a gold shop on U Thong Road, Ban Nuea Subdistrict, Mueang District, Kanchanaburi at 8:56 a.m. A man in a black shirt is seen selecting gold necklaces on a tray. Shortly after, he picks up the gold and runs away, but the shop owner and several employees chase him inside the shop. The culprit escapes on a motorcycle and flees, but the motorcycle falls in front of the shop. The culprit runs away on Phatthana Road, not wearing shoes.

Not long after, the officers received a tip from a good citizen that the perpetrator’s black long-sleeved shirt covering his head and long jeans were found abandoned in a thicket in the alley of Kanchanaburi Kindergarten School. The officers therefore went to inspect every house in the area. It
took only about an hour to catch the perpetrator while he was wearing only shorts and hiding in a rented house, which was a two-story row house with no one living there. He bowed and apologized to the officers, saying that he had made a mistake. They then took him to search the gold hiding place on the second floor, where they found a two-baht gold bracelet in a black shirt. Initial questioning revealed that he was Mr. Sonai, 25 years old, from Myanmar. As for the motive for the crime, he only said that he wanted to earn money to travel to see his girlfriend in another province.

The officers then took him to reenact the confession at the gold shop. It took 30 minutes to reenact the confession before taking the suspect for further questioning at Kanchanaburi City Police Station. The gold shop owner stated that before the incident, the thief came in and pretended to buy gold. At first, he chose a 2-salung gold necklace. Then he changed to a 1-baht necklace. While he was looking, he grabbed two gold bracelets a
nd ran out of the shop to get on a motorcycle parked in front of the shop. He decided to run after him and held onto him until the thief’s motorcycle fell over, but the thief escaped. – Thai News Agency
