Ministry of Foreign Affairs, 15 Oct – Assistant Minister of Foreign Affairs confirms the fact that the Thai government is hosting ASEAN discussions on Myanmar, all countries agree, pointing out that if it is done arbitrarily, it may be seen as interference.

Mr. Rasm Chaleechan, Assistant Minister to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, clarified the facts according to those who commented that the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MFA) has obstructed the efforts of the legislature to resolve the Myanmar issue by bringing this issue to the Assembly of the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU) meeting, including the fact that the Thai government will host the ASEAN Informal Consultation on Myanmar in December. Will it be an intervention in Myanmar’s internal affairs? According to the facts of this matter, on October 2, 2024, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs went to provide an opinion to the parliament on this issue, as invited. He said that the idea of ??some legislatures wanting Thailand to propose the Emergency Item on Myanm
ar at the IPU meeting in Geneva could be a signal that Thailand is choosing a side, which could affect efforts to persuade and talk with various parties in Myanmar as a mediator, as well as affecting efforts to resolve cross-border issues, such as crime and the environment. On that day, the majority of the parliament agreed with the opinion of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, which was a joint decision of the entire legislature. It was not the Ministry of Foreign Affairs who had the authority to obstruct as has been distorted in the facts.

The Assistant Minister of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs emphasized that in resolving the Myanmar problem, it must be done carefully and with discussions with ASEAN member countries first. The actions of the Thai government by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, including hosting the ASEAN meeting, are acknowledged and accepted by all ASEAN member countries. Therefore, it is not an intervention in Myanmar’s internal affairs as some have commented. On the contrary, if Thailan
d proceeds alone without discussing with ASEAN member countries first, it may have negative effects and may be seen as an intervention. -312.-Thai News Agency
