Strong waves capsize boats and destroy houses, worst in 10 years

Miscellaneous

Libong Island residents are suffering as strong winds and waves cause 7 local fishing boats to capsize, and several resorts and houses to be damaged, the worst in 10 years.

Yesterday evening (18 September) in Village No. 5, Ban Lang Khao, Tambon Koh Libong, Amphoe Kantang, Trang Province, after heavy rain and waves 2-3 meters high swept ashore, 7 local fishing boats capsized. The village headman and villagers helped salvage the sunken boats to shore. Meanwhile, the heavy rain and storm winds damaged more than 15 resorts and villager homes, some completely destroyed, affecting 50-60 people.

Similarly, at Ban Mottanoi, Village No. 3, Koh Libong Subdistrict, Kantang District, Trang Province, Mr. Nattawat Thale Luek, village headman of Village No. 3 and community leaders led villagers to survey the damage after 3-4 meter high waves smashed and damaged 15 houses along the sea, 8 of which were completely damaged and 7 were partially damaged. Debris was scattered all over the area. Some belongings that were not m
oved in time were floating scattered along the beach, causing villagers to shed tears and just stand and watch as their houses were slowly destroyed by the waves before their eyes.

Some of the houses that were partially destroyed and about to be swept away by the waves caused the owners to live in fear. They moved the elderly and children to stay with relatives and helped to remove the house structures such as roof tiles, structural wood, doors and windows to keep for future use. Meanwhile, along the beach, many trees such as pine trees and large coconut trees fell down. The Koh Libong Subdistrict Administrative Organization and the local government came to provide initial assistance and brought in a backhoe to level the area and temporarily removed the fallen trees to block the force of the waves.

Villagers on Libong Island said they were in fear because the waves had hit their houses for more than 2 hours. They had to wait until the water receded before they could go to sleep. This was the worst in more t
han 10 years. They called on relevant agencies to provide urgent assistance after they had asked for a water barrier to be built several years ago, but there had been no progress.
