Ministry of Public Health, 46-year-old mother complains to the Ministry of Public Health that doctors forced natural birth, causing the baby’s right arm to be deformed – Ministry of Public Health prepares to send the baby to a psychiatric hospital to investigate the truth.

Ms. Pattama, the mother of a 10-month-old girl, met with Mr. Kongtri Thanakrit Chitareerat, Assistant Minister of Public Health, to ask for help after a doctor at a hospital in Pathum Thani Province tried to give birth naturally, but the baby’s nerves in her right arm were severed, causing her to be disabled.

Ms. Pattama revealed that in August last year, she was pregnant with her fourth child. When the time came to give birth, she went to a hospital in Khlong Nueng, Pathum Thani Province. Before giving birth, she told the nurse that she wanted a C-section because she was 46 years old and did not have the strength to push, so she was afraid that the baby might be harmed. However, the doctor informed her that she was still young and could
give birth naturally. Before entering the operating room, the nurse brought her a C-section consent form to sign. While in the operating room, the doctor used a natural birth. After giving birth, she found that the baby did not respond for 1 minute before the nurses stimulated her until she cried out. The nurse then took the baby to the ICU for treatment. The next morning, she went to visit her baby and found bruises on several parts of her body, especially on her right arm, which made her unable to move her arm.

Previously, I had taken my child for surgery once on January 12. Now my child is only 4 months old. Yesterday, I took my child to have his right arm checked at the same hospital. The doctor informed me that my child had to undergo a second nerve surgery because his condition did not improve. A hospital representative also came to talk to him and asked for the damages to be reduced from 10 million baht to 5 million baht.

Pol. Col. Thanakrit revealed that the hospital where the incident occurred was
a government hospital not affiliated with the Ministry of Public Health. However, he ordered the Department of Health Service Support (HSS) and the Medical Council to investigate whether the doctor who performed the cesarean section followed professional standards and invited the hospital to discuss the damages that occurred. After this, he will take his daughter to the Neurology Hospital to see if the abnormality was caused by the doctor’s actions or if it was an abnormality that occurred during the pregnancy. However, the mother insisted that it was caused by birth because during the ultrasound, the daughter’s arms and legs could be lifted normally and were 100% healthy.

Dr. Prakit Sarathep, Director of the Public Health Ministry’s Inspection Division, revealed that normally, if the mother has no history of cesarean section or is not at risk, the doctor will recommend a natural birth. However, in this case, it was caused by an imbalance between the mother’s pelvis and the size of the baby. The doctor shoul
d consider changing the birth method. However, if the patient insists on a cesarean section, the doctor must proceed as requested.
