Bangkok issues new rules for commercial areas

Bangkok has issued a new announcement on the criteria for trading areas. When setting up stalls, they must leave enough space for people to travel conveniently and safely.

Mr. Ekwaranyu Amrapal, spokesman for the Bangkok Metropolitan Administration, revealed that Mr. Chadchart Sittipunt, the governor of Bangkok, signed the Bangkok Metropolitan Administration announcement on the criteria, methods, and conditions for determining trading areas and selling or distributing goods on streets or public places. The criteria for considering the determination of trading areas are as follows:

Roads with 3 or more traffic lanes, whether one-way or two-way, must have at least 2 meters of free space for people to pass through when placing stalls. The district office must review the necessity and appropriateness of being a trading area every 2 years. As for roads with less than 3 traffic lanes, whether one-way or two-way, must have at least 1.5 meters of free space for people to pass through when placing stalls. The distr
ict office must review the necessity and appropriateness of being a trading area every 1 year. Stalls must not be larger than 3 square meters and must not be more than 1.5 meters deep. Stalls must be placed on only one side, close to the road and at least 50 centimeters away from the road surface to create a safe distance for traffic. A distance of 3 meters must be left every 10 stalls for entrances, exits and emergency routes. The design, characteristics of stalls and stall accessories, such as umbrellas and stall roofs, must be neat and tidy and appropriate for the characteristics of that area.

For the qualifications of traders and sales assistants, they must be Thai nationals with the following additional qualifications: They must be state welfare cardholders, be a party to a contract to purchase a house with the National Housing Authority in the Community Development Institute’s Secure Housing Project and still have debt obligations, be a person who receives welfare payments from the Ministry of Social D
evelopment and Human Security, and have an income not exceeding 300,000 baht per year, based on income after deducting business expenses according to the personal income tax filing evidence. In addition, traders must register their intentions with the district office that has designated their trading area. There must be no other stalls or sales assistants in other stalls in the area designated by Bangkok as a trading area.
